- John attended Raeford Institute and Davidson College, graduating from Davidson in 1882. He then entered the medical school of the University of Virginia. He practiced medicine in Durham for a time before returning to Davidson, where he took over the preparatory school in medicine and became the college physician. He continued as president of the medical school until it merged with the Medical College of Virginia in 1914. In 1915 he opened an office in Charlotte, establishing the Munroe Clinic of Internal Medicine, Neurology and Cardiology.
