Notes |
- Alice graduated from Bradford Academy. She studied music and was interested in charities and in the city of Lewiston, Maine.
Frank Dixon, Alice's husband, had great physical strength as a young man. He was well known as a boxer and wrestler and a man of iron will. As a physician, he completed his own appendectomy, with some assistance. He performed Mastoidectomies on infants before infant-sized instruments had been invented.
He was a Mason, member of the Lewiston Commandery Knights Templar, the Kora Mystic Shrine and the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks.
In 1900, the family went to Denver, Colorado, where Dr. Dixon established a second medical practice after taking courses at the Cleveland Medical School. He was licensed in Utah, Colorado and Maine for surgery and was associated with the staffs of St. Marie's General Hospital and the Central Maine General Hospital (from which he retired as Surgeon Emeritus), and the Denver Hospitals.
After sixteen years in Colorado, the family returned to Maine, where Dr. Dixon did outstanding pioneer surgery and founded a nursing school at the Hospital. They lived at 671 Main St., Lewiston, Maine.
Alice was instrumental in establishing the first kindergarten class in a Lewiston Public School, the Dingley School. She was an active member of the Mary Dillingham Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution and was a supporter of the Lewiston United Baptist Church and the Cleff and Spinet and Philharmonic Clubs. She was a director of the Sarah C. Frye home for Aged Women, and the Stanton Bird Club. She personally managed her family's financial matters and left a considerable fortune at her death.
