- In 1773, John's parents left Scotland to go to America. Their ship was disabled soon after embarking so they had to return to Ireland where they spent the winter of 1773/1774. John was born during this wait.
His father remained loyal the the Crown of England when the American Revolution broke out. The family was forced to flee to Canada where, after the war, they settled in Charlottenburg, Glengarry County, Ontario. They first lived on lot 22, first consession. Later, John's father moved to another farm and John remained on the original plot.
John's wife was Nancy "Ann" Ross.
