• Notes

  In 1870, Barney appears on the Newton County, Mississippi census with the household of his older sister, Sarah. He moved with Sarah's family to Texas in 1872 and settled with them near Canton, Texas, and became a farmer. After Barney's first wife, Ora, died, a neighbor, Tommy Clark, helped him and his six children survive. When he remarried, Barney named one of his children after Mr. Clark. Eventually, Mr. Clark sold Barney his first farm.
