  James graduated from Newton High School in Newton, New Hampshire and attended the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. He owned and operated Munro Drydock and Ship Repair in Chelsea and East Boston for more than 50 years until his retirement at age 85. He had also operated the Roy B. Rendle Company of East Boston, a marine foundation and pile-driving enterprise, for more than 20 years. When he died, he had five children, 24 grandchildren, and 31 great-grandchildren.
