      The following is an opituary from the Daily Hampshire Gazette, Northampton, Massachusetts - 24 Aug 1978 - from the Alger reference.

      Richard S. Munroe, 64, Scottish genealogist

      ASHFIELD - Richard S. Munroe, 64, of Baptist Corner Road, a noted Scottish genealogist and one of the organizers of Clan Munroe in this country, died suddenly Mon­day whife visifing in Morroe Bay, Calif.

      Born in Medford Sept. 7, 1913, the son of the late Herbert C. and Alice (Bennett) Munroe, he spent, much of his time in the past 15 years researching Munroe family history.

      From his studies, he compiled a book entitled "The Geneology and History of the Lexington, Mass. Munroes."

      A graduate of Northampton High School, he worked for a time' at the former Prophylactic Brush Co. He retired several years ago as the purchasing agent for the Acme Chain Corp. of Holyoke.

      He was the first president of Clan Munroe of the United States and was serving as secretary of the organization at the time of his death. He was in California attending a gathering of the group when he died.

      In addition to Clan Munroe, he was active in Clan Macpherson and Clan Murray.

      Together with his wife, the former Marjorie Philbrook, he operated the Munroe Highland
      House of Ashfield which deals in Scottish imports.

      He was a member of the Hampshire Lodge of Masons AF&AM in Haydenville, a former member of the Florence Congregational Church and a member of the Congregational Church of Ashfield.

      Besides' his wife, he leaves a daughter, Lee Bauer of Toronto, Canada; and several nieces and nephews.

      The funeral will be Saturday at 2 p.m. in the Newell ­Northampton Funeral Home.
      The burial will he in the Spring Grove Cemetery.

      Calling hours at the funeral home will be tomorrow from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.
      At 8 p.m. tomorrow, a Masonic Evergreen service will be conducted.
