- Error alert: According to the dates provided in references, John's mother was 56 years old when he was born. That's probably possible, but it invites skepticism.
One reference says both John and Jennie were born in or near Dundee, Scotland.
They both emmigrated to Galveston, Texas in 1867. They happened to be on the same ship and shortly after their arrival, they were married at the Liberty Hill Methodist Church. Jennie was the daughter of William Ross.
John engaged in the mercantile business, handling hardware and later expanding to general merchandise. John and Jennie were quite religious assembling their large family for morning and evening prayers and some times Bible verses from each member of the family.
