    • John's mother died when he was about three years old. He went to live with his grandparents until their death, and then with his father, who had remarried and was practicing law in Grundy County, Missouri. He served in the Confederate Army during the Civil War. After the war, he went into business in St. Louis, Missouri and for a time worked with the Hargadine-McKittrick Dry Goods Company. He was a merchant and banker.

      His wife was the daughter of Judge Ephraim B. and Elizabeth (Allen) Ewing.
