- Clay graduated from the U.S. Naval Academy at Annapolis, Maryland. During Warld War II, he served as a Lieutenant Commander. He was twice awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross. He was killed in action in the South Pacific.
He was a member of the Society of the Cincinnati. He died unmarried.
