• Notes

  William lived in the Morgan District, Rutherford County, North Carolina. He was a school teacher. He may have been the son of his father's first wife, Saunders. One reference gives his birthdate as abt 1750. He and a William Gray went into court in Oct 1785 and went special bail for all damages and costs of Addai Osborn, a cousin. In Apr 1789 "administration granted William Monroe on estate of John Monroe." He went to Henry County, Kentucky around 1795, and was drawing a pension for Revolutionary War services from Kentucky. He may have owned land in both North Carolina and Kentucky. William's wife, Margaret (Peggy) Whiteside was the daughter of William and Elizabeth (Stockton) Whiteside, both born in Ireland. He may have fought with the Whiteside Boys at the Battle of Kings Mountain in North Carolina. An entry on the 1790 census for Morgan District, Rutherford County, North Carolina gives a William Munroe with the following household: 1 white male over 16, 4 white males under 16, and 3 white females. It is not a precise fit with what William's family should have been at the time, but this could be the same William. The last known mention of William was in Jul 1795 in Rutherford County, North Carolina. He may have died in Indiana.
