  Thomas graduated from St. John's College and obtained his M.D. degree from the University of Maryland. He went to Rushville, Schuyler County, Illinois, around 1837. In a letter that he wrote to his sister, Rebecca, he said that he did not like Rushville and missed his family. This must have been written before he met Annis Hinman, his future wife. Most of the letter admonishes Rebecca to devote more time to religion. Thomas served as a medical officer with an Illinois regiment in the Civil War.
