- John served in the American Revolutionary War after which he moved to Kentucky.
His death date is in doubt. One source gives it as 25 May 1837 and another as 28 Jan 1798. It appears that the former date is correct. One reference gives his wife's death date as 24 Jan 1796. She was from Cumberland Co., Virginia.
Some references say he died in Westmoreland County, Virginia.

«i»According to the History of Woodford County, KY, p. 355, found on Ancestry.com for John Monroe, there is support for John Monroe as a veteran of the Revolutionary War.
The same page states that John Monroe, and his kinsman, Andrew Monroe also of Scott County KY, were closely related to President Monroe. The said Andrew was to have married Ann Bell, the daughter of Thomas Bell Senior and Elizabeth Weir (aunt of Col. Robert Thomson Bell who married Ann Monroe, daughter of John Monroe & Winifred Berryman.)«/i»
