Notes |
- John was a soldier in the 73rd Regiment of Foot, known as the MacLeod's Highlanders. He was known as 'Bangalore Munro' from having hoisted British colors on the ramparts and behaved with great bravery at the storming of that Indian fortress. After ten years of hectic soldiering in the battles and sieges of the Mysore wars, he was promoted to Lieutenant in one of the Royal Garrison Battalions. He was declared unfit for further service in the field because he had lost the use of his left arm due to a cannon shot.
He left the military and settled in the Easter Ross burgh of Tain where he was elected to the town council and became a magistrate.
He had very high hopes for a military career for his son, Alexander, who was a Lieutenant in the Blues (a cavalry unit). When he heard that his son had lost his commission because of a duel, he was "struck with paralysis and the fine old soldier's grey hairs were driven to the grave with sorrow".
