Notes |
- On 20 Feb 1794, John sold a tract of land on the Rocky Branch of the Nottoway River which appears to be the same tract of land purchased by William Monroe 32 years before. This is the only evidence linking John as a possible son of William.
The Gerald Monroe reference says that John was the son of Andrew Monroe and Jane Watts.
John first appears in the records of Mecklenburg County, Virginia in 1784 when he received a land grant of 444 acres of land on the south side of the Roanoke River. He sold half of the land on 8 Jan 1787.
On 16 Feb 1808, John sold the other half of his property because he apparently planned to move to another state. He died before he completed his move. His estate was valued at 668 pounds 3 shillings and 6 pence.
Error alert: There is a lot of confusion surrounding this person. It is possible that this is actually the record of two different men named John Monroe. Some researchers say he was the son of William Munro and Mary Smith. There are two children listed in this family named John who are alive at the same time which is almost certainly an error.
