«i»Josiah Munro, Patriot
by Richard (Dick) Smith and Cheryl Smith Gosselin
On September 26, 2010, the Ann Story Chapter of the National Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution dedicated a bronze memorial plaque commemorating the service of Josiah Munro. He enlisted in the Connecticut Regiment in May, 1781, at the age of seventeen and served for three years as Private. He was dismissed from service in 1784. The dedication service was held at the site of Josiah's tombstone in the Old Mettowee Cemetery in Pawlet, Vermont.
Josiah Munro Jr. was born January 25, 1764 in Canterbury, Connecticut, son of Josiah Munro and his wife Mary Hyde. Sadly his father died February, 1778, at Valley Forge. Josiah married Susana Andrus, and soon after the two of them moved with her family to Pawlet, Vermont, where they are found in the 1790 Census. Josiah again served his country during the War of 1812 as Captain of the Artillery with the Vermont Militia. He was known to many as "captain" even after the war.
Josiah died November 9, 1846, and he and Susana are buried together in the Old Mettowee Cemetery. In 1884 one of their descendants, Hattie Monroe, married a member of the Smith family, who was also from Pawlet, Josiah is the 4th great-grandfather of the author, Richard (Dick) Smith, who is a member of the Sons of the American Revolution. His daughter, Cheryl, is a member of the Ann Story Chapter of the DAR.
Also present at the ceremony were members of the Smith and Gosselin families and family friends. The West Rutland Boy Scout Troop 116 attended as Color Guard, and Taps was played by a local bugler. Refreshments were served by the DAR following the dedication, bringing a warm conclusion of fellowship to the solemn, but joyous memorial service of this Patriot.«/i»
