  • Notes
    • After working for a time with his family in the shoe company, Charles bought out a large retail shoe business in Kansas City, with John N. Packard. The firm prospered, but Charles returned to Maine to join with Henry M. Packard, Heman Packard and Willard Linscott, as successors to the James Munroe and Co. firm. Again he was successful, but the business was discontinued due to its distance from a railroad connection, and he went to Kearney, Nebraska.

After some time there, he established a firm in Athol, Massachusetts, known as Munroe, Ellis and Smollidge Co. Upon retiring from the shoe business, he bacame interested in hotels in Old Orchard, Rumford Falls and elsewhere. When his health failed, he returned to Auburn, Maine.

He and his second wife, Fannie Venner, had one child who died at birth.
