  • Notes
    • John's wife was the daughter of Ridenour Baker of Kansas City, Missouri, who left her a considerable interest in a wholesale grocery company, land in San Joaquin Valley, California, and a large sum in Liberty Loan Bonds, as well as paintings and antiques from Europe.

After working his way through Phillips Academy and Dartmouth College, John entered the railroad business, first as agent in the Green Bay and Western Railway and the Minneapolis and Omaha Railroad. He came to the Union Pacific in 1882 as assistant general freight agent in Omaha, and retired as Vice-President. In addition, he was Vice-President of the Omaha and Council Bluffs Street Railway Company.

In 1916 he earned a MA at Dartmouth College and shortly after went to live in Long Beach, California. After the death of his wife in 1921, he established the Hattie B. Munroe Home for Convalescing Crippled Children in Omaha, under the direction of his wife's long time companion, Clara E. Elder.

The estates of Hattie and John Alexander amounted to almost two million dollars, most of which went to charity, since they had no children.
