  • Notes
    • John Munro of Balcony and Coul lived at Ord of Inverbrene and was named "Waddie" or "a mhadaidh" from having killed a wolf. He took his M.A. in 1498 at Aberdeen University. He was presented to the vicarage of Logy and Urquhart when it was vacant.

His wife was Margaret McKenzie (or McLeay or Mcby), daughter of Mcby of Strathchonnin.

"Hugh Munro of Coul married thrice 1 Eve McLean Chieftane of the Shiel Tarlichs daughter mother to John Hector and Andrew...of each of whom came great families."

"Mr John Munro of Balcony and Coul married Mcby of Strathchonnins daughter Margaret by whom he had John Hugh William Andrew David and Donald."

"John was presented to vicarage of Logy and Urquhart i.e. Logie-Urquhart when vacant; wife Margaret called McLeay in Culcairn copy and McKenzie in Teaninich copy.

There is reason to believe that the Munros of Balcony in this MS are identical with the Munros of Urquhart on record from 1556 until kirklands of Balconie were acquired by Hector Munro of Clynes later Sir Hector of Foulis; the John/Hugh/Robert succession in both is significant, and other similarities are noted..."

"In 1551 Queen Mary presented him [William Munro [980]] to the Chaplainry of Saint Monon, on the lands of Balconie, vacant by the death of John Munro, eldest son of Hugh Munro of Coul."

John was designated during his father's life as Mr John Munro of Balcony. He studied for the Church, and took his M.A. degree at Aberdeen University. In 1498, he was presented with the Vicarage of Logie-Urquhard, which was apparently Logie-Wester and Urquhart in the Black Isle, vacant by the resignation of Sir Dugald Runison.

In 1551, Queen Mary presented William Munro, second son of Sir William Munro, twelfth Baron of Fowlis, to the Chaplainary of Saint Monan, on the lands of Balconie, vacant by the decease of John Munro.
