  • Notes
    • John "Jack" Todd Munro graduated from an engineering program at the University of Colorado at Boulder. Upon graduation, he went to work for the Bureau of Reclamation doing project investigation and dam design for an 11-state area. In 1936, he joined his father and D.G. Son in a newly formed Grand Junction-based company, S&M Supply, which specialized in reclaiming mining equipment left over from the gold and silver rushes of the late 1800's. S&M was a major business in Mesa County, employing well over 100 people during the uranium boom of the early '50's. The boom, however, was short-lived and in 1959, when the demand for uranium had dwindled, S&M was liquidated.

Jack was involved in several business ventures that had varying degrees of success until 1965, when he and his youngest son, Allen, established Munro Supply. Over the next decade, Jack and Allen guided this specialty pump enterprise into a business that withstood the oil-shale bust of the early 1980's and flourished. Jack retired from Munro Supply in 1975 and provided private engineering consulting services until his full retirement in 1985.

A Registered Professional Engineer, Jack was involved in all aspects of pump engineering for water treatment, irrigation and mining, and created a technical cache of knowledge for the pumping industry. In 1975, Jack was named Engineer of the Year by the Professional Engineers of Colorado. He was the first Western Coloradan to receive this award. Jack was also very active in the community as a member of the Masonic Lodge #55, the Shriners, the American Geological Society, and the American Institute of Mining Engineers.

Throughtout his life, John made innumerable contributions to Grand Junction and the Western Slope. He lived at 710 Lakeshore Drive in Grand Junction, Colorado.
