- Alexander studied for the ministry at the University of St. Andrews. He was appointed minister of Golspie before 1638, and served as a member of the General Assembly that year.
He was transferred to Dornoch before 12 Aug 1639. On 12 Nov 1641, King Charles I made him a gift of 300 merks yearly. At that time he was serving as a member of the Commission of Assembly. King Charles later granted him 800 merks on conditin that he give 300 merks per year to "upholding the Church," and 200 to the master of the Dornoch Grammar School.
He served for several years as Regent of St. Andrews University.
In 1648, he was deposed for "compliance with Montrose."
He had no children.
