Margaret Monroe Clark said that "Grandpa Monroe left his home in Canada and as far as they knew never went back. He left before Jennie was born and never said where he was."

John immigrated in 1861 and was naturalized in 1862. Both of his parents are listed on the census as being born in Scotland.
