(The following is from an e-mail message sent by Jeff Baker - 10 Jan 2015)

«i»That Martha, Hiram, John and Betsey were siblings is an assumption on my part and is based on circumstantial evidence as follows:

    1) Ira and Emaline HOWERTON were brother and sister.

    2) Ira HOWERTON married Betsey BAKER on 11-June-1839 in Grainger,TN.

    3) Emaline HOWERTON married John BAKER in 1837 in Grainger,TN. William HOLLINGSWORTH, husband of Martha BAKER, was the bondsman for this marriage of Emaline HOWERTON to John BAKER.

    4) William HOLLINGSWORTH, husband of Martha BAKER, was the bondsman for the marriage of Hiram BAKER to Lucinda MONROE in 1833, Grainger County.

    5) William WATSON was the bondsman for the marriage of William HOLLINGSWORTH to Martha BAKER. William WATSON appears as a Head of Family on same page as Martin BAKER in the 1830 US Federal Census (Grainger, TN). That is, William WATSON and Martin BAKER were close neighbors.

    6) Anna PARKER, now remarried, (1st husband, a HOLLINGSWORTH, deceased), mother of William HOLLINGSWORTH, appears as a Head of Family on same page as Martin BAKER in the 1830 US Federal Census (Grainger, TN). That is, Anna PARKER and Martin BAKER were close neighbors.

    7) Hiram BAKER, husband of Lucinda MONROE and speculative son of Martin & Sophia, had a daughter, also named Sophia. Hiram & Lucinda also had a son, William Martin BAKER (1836-1909). That is, Hiram & Lucinda named two of their children after Hiram's speculative mother and father. Census records place both Hiram & Lucinda and son, William Martin Baker & wife Sarah, in Union County.

    8) Census records for Martha BAKER, daughter of Martin & Sophia, show that both of her parents were born in NC, which is consistent with census records for Martin (b 1793) and his wife, Sophia (b 1792).

Mark sold his property in Powder Springs Gap, Grainger County, in 1840 and bought land in Raccoon Valley of Grainger County, later Union County. The homeplace of Mark Monroe was one quarter mile northeast of the courthouse on highway 33, Maynardville. This property was sold in 1992.

The following is the will of Mark Monroe from the Sutphen reference:

From the Union County, TN., Court Records, 3 May 1870:

A paper writing purporting to be the nuncuperative will of Mark Monroe was this day presented to the County Court for probate, when R. J. Carr & Hardin Skaggs, subscribing witnesses thereto appended, came into open court and being duly sworn according to law testified and said that the nuncuperative will of Mark Monroe, deceased, here presented, was produced to writing by us and that it is the nuncuperative will of Mark Monroe, deceased, and that he was of sound mind and disposing memory at the time of making the same. The court being fully satisfied that said will is sufficiently proven and legally established as the last will and testament of Mark Monroe, deceased, it is ordered by the court that said will be entered of record:

Nuncuperative Will of Mark Monroe, Deceased

We, Hardin Skaggs and R. J. Carr, do state that the nuncuperative will of Mark Monroe was made by him on the 27th day of August 1870 to Hardin Skaggs, and to the said R. J. Carr, on the 2nd day of September 1870, in our presence to which we were specially required to bare witnesses by the testator himself in the presence of us, that it was made in his last sickness at John P. Warwick's, in said county of Union, and the same is as follows to wit:

It was his will and desire that his son W. G. Monroe, should have all of his land that lies North of the crop fence that stands on the south side of the old apple orchard and that he wanted W. G. Monroe to maintain Tempy Monroe, his wife, and Says Monroe his son, and that their maintenance is to come out of the land or the proceeds of the same, but that W. G. Monroe is to have full control of the land.

And it is my desire that Calvin Monroe, my son have all of my land lying South of the crops fence above named, for the sum of five hundred dollars, to be paid as follows, One hundred dollars each year, and to pay interest of three hundred dollars from date. Said sum of five hundred dollars to be equally divided among my eight heirs that is not mentioned in this will, as to any personal property, there is but little of it probably will take it to pay expenses.

This 8th day of September 1870.

    Richard J. Carr, (signed)
    Hardin Skaggs, (signed)
