After his mother died, Walter went to live with his older half sister, Sarah. Walter is found in her household in the 1870 census of Newton County, Mississippi. Walter moved with Sarah's family in 1872 to Texas where they settled near Canton, Texas.
Walter is found on the 1900 census in Luling, Caldwell County, Texas with his wife and two children.

James' father is said to have been the brother of President James Monroe, but no solid details are known.
He moved to Decatur, Newton County, Mississippi before 1840, and is found on the census there in 1840, 1850 and 1860. He was a farmer, a lawyer, a State Senator from the district comprising Newton & Jasper counties (1854-1856), and Mayor of Decatur.
He is reported to have been a slave holder and may have fought in the Civil War.
