  1. 2.  John Monro was born on 23 Apr 1756 in , , New Jersey, USA (son of Robert Munro and Mary Wilson); died on 7 Oct 1828 in Walsingham Twp., Norfolk Co., Ontario, Canada; was buried in 1828 in Monro/Gillaspy Cem., Walsingham Twp., St. Williams, Norfolk Co., Ontario, Canada.

    Notes:

    John filed an Upper Canada Land Petition dated 21 Apr 1795 stating that he was a Lieutenant in the New Jersey Volunteers in 1776 and was given a commission. After the war, he suffered a long and distressing imprisonment by the enemies of His Majesty's cause. Because of the loyalty of his father's family the estate was greatly depreciated and impaired. John requested a grant of land stating that he had a wife and two children. The Executive Council ordered him the usual allowance.

    John lived initially in the Niagra District where he was a Justice of the Peace. On 25 Nov 1807 he purchased from Simon Mabee the south half of lot 24, Con2, Walsingham Twp. and made that his homestead. On 10 Mar 1819 he sold 75 acres of the lot to his son-in-law, William Gallaspy, followed by the other 25 acres on 22 Jul 1822.

    John married Sarah Hathaway before 1793. Sarah was born on 16 Jan 1764; died on 11 Dec 1850 in Walsingham Twp., Norfolk Co., Ontario, Canada; was buried in 1850 in Monro/Gillaspy Cem., Walsingham Twp., St. Williams, Norfolk Co., Ontario, Canada. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

    After John's death, Sarah petitioned for Letters of Administration over his estate. She continued to live on the homestead with her daughter, Harriett, and her husband.

    Notes:

    Robert joined the 42nd Regiment of Highlanders (Black Watch) in Scotland with Donald McCall, whose daughter later married Robert's son, James. They went with the regiment to America during the Seven Years War (1757-1763) and then settled at Basking Ridge, New Jersey.

    During the American Revolutionary War, both Robert and Donald supported the Crown.
