12. | Capt. Hector Munro was born on 28 Nov 1796 (son of Capt. John Munro, Of Kirkton and Anabella MacKenzie); died on 12 Feb 1868 in Galt, Ontario, Canada. Notes:
In 1811, when he was fifteen years old, Hector entered the army as an Ensign in the 80th Regiment in 1811. Two years later, he was promoted to Lieutenant in the 49th Regiment. He carried the colors at the battle of Crysler's Farm, and won a medal there, although he was wounded. He also fought at Plattsburg and Lundy's Law.
He was placed on half pay on 25 Mar 1817, from the 103rd Regiment, but on 25 Dec 1838, he was again placed on full pay as a Lieutenant in the Royal Newfoundland Veterans. When the Royal Canadian Rifles was formed in 1846, he was given command of a company. Soon after this, he exchanged into the 2nd Regiment of Foot, or Queen's, and retired by sale of his commission in 1848.
In 1859, he was appointed Surveyor of Customs at Galt, Ontario, an office which he held for the remainder of his life.
For several years he was President of the Galt and Hamilton Highland Societies, and largely because of his efforts, a striking monument was erected at Queenston to the memory of Sir Isaac Brock. Hector's name appears on the monument as hon. secretary.
