  1. 4.  Hector Bethune was born about 1782 (son of Angus Bethune and Catherine Munro); died on 31 Dec 1849; was buried in Dingwall Church, Dingwall, Scotland.

    Notes:

    Hector studied at King's College and the University of Aberdeen. He received his M.A. on 27 Mar 1800. He was licensed by the Presbytery of Dingwall on 31 May 1802. The following April, the Hon. Maria Hay Mackenzie of Cromarty presented him to the church and parish of Alness, as his father's successor, and he was inducted there on 28 Sep 1803 at the early age of 21 years.

    He had not completed his studies when the parish became vacant, but his father's family was respected so much by the parishioners that they agreed to prolong the vacancy in order that Hector might get the appointment. He remained minister of Alness for nearly 17 years and then was transferred to Dingwall on 29 Jul 1820. His move away from Alness caused very general regret.

    He was of kindly disposition, refined manners, and bore a very high character both as a minister and a gentleman. He always took a deep interest in the material as well as in the spiritual welfare of his people, and his many excellent and amiable qualities secured for him the esteem and goodwill of all classes, especially of the poor, by whom he was much beloved and highly respected.

    He served as minister of Dingwall for 29 years.

    Notes:

    Jane was the youngest daughter of Kenneth Mackenzie, Millbank, and granddaughter of Sir Alexander Mackenzie, Baronet of Gairloch.

    She was remarkable for her great sprightliness, personal beauty, vigorous intelligence, and for the lively interest which she always took in anything having to do with the Highlands and Highland families. She was an acknowledged authority on the genealogy of nearly all the leading familie in Ross-shire.

    She died in Edinburgh at the age of 91.

    Notes:

    The Rev. Angus Bethune, A.M., was the eldest son of the Rev. John Bethune, minister of Glenshiel 1730-1781, and his wife, Christian (Macleod) Bethune.

    Angus graduated from the University and King's College in Aberdeen on 2 Apr 1764, and went on to study at Edinburgh. He was licensed by the Presbytery of Gairloch on 8 Oct 1766, and ordained to Harris on 23 Aug 1768. He was transferred to Alness on 25 Jul 1771 and admitted on 25 Sep. He got a new church built at Alness in 1780.

    For some time, he served as Chaplain of the 71st Foot.
