8. | Dr. Thomas Monro was born in 1759 in London, , Greater London, England (son of John Monro, Of Fyrish, Contu and Elizabeth Culling Smith); died on 14 May 1833 in Bushey, Middlesex, England; was buried in Churchyard, Bushey, Middlesex, England. Notes:

He was admitted as a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians on 19 Apr 1791, was Censor in 1792, 1799 and 1812, Harveian Orator in 1799, and was named Elect on 28 Nov 1811. On 19 Jul 1787, he was appointed Assistant Physician of Bethlehem Hospital and became Principal Physician on 2 Feb 1792, succeeding his father in that post. He was Principal Physican until Jun 1816 when he resigned in favor of his son, Dr. Edward Thomas Monro. Soon after resigning, he retired from the practice of his profession
Thomas was a devoted admirer of the fine arts, and the patron of Joseph M. W. Turner, the celebrated English landscape painter, William Hunt, the eminent water-color artist, and others almost equally distinguished. John Ruskin, the great art critic and author, says in his "Notes" on Turner, dated Mar 1878, that "his true master was Dr. Monro; to the practical teaching of that first patron, and the wise simplicity of method of water-color study, in which he was disciplined by him and companioned by Giston, the healthy and constant development of the greater power is primarily to be attributed; the greatness of the power itself, it is impossible to overestimate."
Thomas attended King George III during his last illness.
