The fourth son of Hugh of Fyrish and Kildermorie was born in 1648 and was the first of the family to spell his name as MONRO. He was awarded a degree of M.A. from the Church at St. Mary's College, St. Andrews in 1669; was ordained in Holy Orders in 1673; made D.D. by his Alma Mater in 1682. Appointed Principal of University of Edinburgh in 1685 and served until 1689 when he resigned over differences in the monarchial sucession of William and Mary as he was an avowed follower of the Stuarts. He removed to London in 1691 and died in 1698 at age 50.

Rev. Alexander was twice married and father of nine children, although only two children - a son James and daughter, Elizabeth - survived to adulthood. James - born at Wemyss in 1680 - carried on the representation of the family. He was the renown Dr. James Monro, founder of a line of famous Monro physicians and other distinguished professional men.

Alexander became the representative of the family upon the death of his three elder brothers, who died without sons, although Alexander does not appear to have succeeded to the hereditary property of Fyrish.

Alexander studied for the Church at St. Salvator's College, St. Andrews, where he graduated M.A. in 1664. In 1665, when only seventeen years old, he was persuaded by a relative, Lieutenant Colonel Alexander Munro, to go abroad with him. He entered Lord Dumbarton's Regiment and accompanied it to France, where he was on active military duty for two and a half years. He then returned to Scotland and resumed his former studies for the Church at St. Mary's College, St. Andrews, and took his degree of M.A. in 1669.

At some point in his life, Alexander began writing his surname "Monro."

He entered into Holy Orders, and was ordained in 1673. On 7 Apr 1673, he was admitted to the second charge of the town and parish of Dunfermline. He was transferred to Kinglassie, county Fife, on 26 Mar 1676, and then to Wemyss on 26 Apr 1678 where he was presented by the Town Council of Edinburgh.

He received his D.D. in Feb 1682 and before Mar 1683, he resigned his charge at Wemyss because he had been nominated by Archbishop Sharp, the Chancellor, to the Professorship of Divinity at St. Mary's, which had changed its name to New College, St. Andrews. Alexander had been serving as Principal of the university 1682-1683.

On 9 Dec 1685, Alexander was appointed Principal of the University of Edinburgh, and on the same day he was nominated by the Town council to the Second or Collegiate Charge of the High Church of that city, to which he was inducted on 30 Dec 1685. Dr. Monro was to receive 2000 merks as Principal of Edinburgh University and 1600 merks as incumbent of the High Church, later renamed St. Giles.

A lengthy biography of Alexander can be found in ref 1.
