The following is from "History of Houston County" via the George Monroe reference.

The following sketch of Col. A. T. Monroe is furnished the author by his only living son, A. T. Monroe, Jr. of San Antonio.

    A. T. Monroe was the son of Augustine Garnett Monroe, who was a nephew of President James Monroe.

"My father had three brothers, named, James, John and Joseph. James was a general in the northern army and his regiment guarded the capital at Washington during the Civil War. He died in harness and his remains lie in the Nathonal cemetery at Washington. A life-like painting of him is now hanging in the armory in New York City. John, his brother, was trader and left his family well provided for in New York City. His brother, Joseph, was a priest in New york City. Mrs. Douglas Robinson of New York City, who was a grandchild of President James Monroe, was a first cosin of my father, and her son married a sister of President Theodore Roosevelt.

My father left Virbinia when he was 18 years old and went to New York City, and my recollection is that he came to Texas in 1842 or 1843, landing at the west end of Galveston Island, instead of the east end, which is now Galveston City. A short time after this he went by ship to Liberty and took a steamboat to Alabama Crossing, on Trinity River, in Houston County. There he remained and went into the mercantile business working with Jacob Albright. In 1846 he married Jacob's daughter, Rachel. He was the oldest child in the family and the only one who came south.

My father had the first wood cook stove that was in Houston County, and had it put up at home, but the negro cook said she couldn't cook on that thing, and the only way he could get her to use it was to have the fireplace walled up. After that she would sneak out to her cabin and cook things in the fireplace. It took our family a long time to get her to use the stove.

    A. T. Monroe was one of the most enterprising men who ever lived in Crockett. Soon after moving to Crockett from Alabama Crossing he build a home on the main street of Crockett--the very house is still standing in good condition. It is now the home of George W. Crook and was built in 1854. The large hewed oak sills in the house are as sound today as when the house was built. The outer walls were weather boarded with good, heart lumber, sawed by H. F. Craddock and dressed by hand. The ceiling was of the same character of lumber. The space between the walls was filled with brick and lathing placed on the inside for plastering, which was never completed. In 1880, a daughter of Uncle Dan Coleman sold the place to Oliver C. Aldrich, who lived there until his death in 1889. After that the author became the owner of the property and sold it to George W. Crook and his wife in 1911. The author has heard the old man Salathiel Robert, a brick mason, say that he built the chimneys to the house, and they are standing today in good condition.

Armstead (or Armistead) built a home in Crocket, Texas which later became a museum. The Ruby Monroe reference says he died there.

It appears that he remarried after his first wife died.

The Johnson reference says that Armistead may have been the son of Andrew Augustine Monroe [3556].

Armstead may have been born 5 Mar 1818.

Armistead married Rachel Jane Albright on 31 Dec 1846. Rachel (daughter of Jacob Allbright) was born on 1 Nov 1828 in Fayette Co., Virginia, USA; died on 11 Nov 1866 in Crockett, Houston Co., Texas, USA. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

  2. 3.  Rachel Jane Albright was born on 1 Nov 1828 in Fayette Co., Virginia, USA (daughter of Jacob Allbright); died on 11 Nov 1866 in Crockett, Houston Co., Texas, USA.

    Notes:

Rachel was the daughter of Jacob and Sarah Jane (Dupre(e)) Albright.

Ref 2 has Rachel's birthplace as Fayette County, Virginia. Ref 1 has Fayette County, Virginia written in and then crossed out and replaced by Tennessee. Ref 3 says "Fayette Co. VA (Census says TENN.)"

  1. 4.  Augustine Garnett Monroe was born in 1792 in , Albemarle Co., Virginia, USA (son of Andrew Augustine Monroe and Ann Bell); died on 25 Sep 1866 in New Richmond, Ohio, USA.

    Notes:

Error alert: Ref 3 says Augustine Garnett "Gus" Monroe was a prisoner on the British ship, "Jersey", and that he was exiled to the United States when he was 16 years old. This doesn't fit with the fact that his father was born in the United States.

He was admitted to the Albemarle County, Virginia bar in 1817, (ref 2 says 1815). He lived in Alabama and Houston County, Texas.

The Johnson reference says Augustine was a son of Andrew's first wife, Frances Garrett.

    Notes:

    Married:
Error alert: The Johnson reference gives Augustine and Bethany's marriage date as 1795, but according to their birth dates given in other references that would mean they were married before they were 4 years old.

    Children:
    1. 2. Armistead Thompson Mason Monroe was born on 15 Mar 1818 in , Albemarle Co., Virginia, USA; died on 3 Sep 1893 in Boulder, Boulder Co., Colorado, USA; was buried in Crockett, Houston Co., Texas, USA.
    2. James Monroe was born about 1820; died in in Washington, , District of Columbia, USA.
    3. John Monroe was born about 1822; and died.

  3. 6.  Jacob Allbright was born about 1803; and died.

Estimate: This birth date is an estimate based on the birth dates of nearest relatives or contemporaries, or based on other clues such as christening date, marriage date, birth order, etc.

    Children:
    1. 3. Rachel Jane Albright was born on 1 Nov 1828 in Fayette Co., Virginia, USA; died on 11 Nov 1866 in Crockett, Houston Co., Texas, USA.

Generation: 4

  1. 8.  Andrew Augustine Monroe was born in 1764 in Milton, Albemarle Co., Virginia, USA (son of Col. Spence Monroe and Elizabeth Jones); died on 2 Dec 1826 in , Fauquier Co., Virginia, USA.

    Notes:

"Burke's Presidential Families" says that Andrew only had two sons. His first wife was Frances Garnett (or Garrett). Ref 2 says Andrew and Frances had two sons.

Andrew attended William and Mary College in Williamsburg, Virginia.

Andrew is believed to have purchased a farm near Batesville in 1781, where he lived for four years.

He served in the Navy during the American Revolutionary War, and moved to Scott County, Kentucky from Albemarle County, Virginia about 1793.

In 1816 he was living on a farm which his brother, President James Monroe, purchased on Limestone, below Milton.

The Johnson reference says he may have been born in 1764 and may have died in 1826. Ref 4 says he died in 1828.

Several references give Andrew's death place as Milton County, Virginia, but there has never been a Milton County, Virginia. Other references say he died in Fauquier County, Virginia.

There is much confusion and probably a lot of error in this family record. There is another Andrew Monroe [529] married to another Ann Bell in a completely different family line. Is this an error or just an interesting coincidence? Care must be taken here because of the many similar names at about the same time and place.
