  1. 8.  Judge Charles Tyler was born in 1695 in , Stafford Co., Virginia, USA (son of Tyler); died in 1724 in , Stafford Co., Virginia, USA.

    Notes:

Judge Charles Tyler was the son of Charles and Jane Tyler.

Ref. (3) states that an issue of the William and Mary Quarterly erroneously placed Charles Tyler (b. 1717, d. 1768) as a son of Judge Charles Tyler when in fact, the younger Charles was the son of of Judge Charles Tyler's brother, Benjamin. However, research done by Kate Wiley Bartok cogently refutes this conclusion and conclusively proves that Charles Tyler (b. 1717) was indeed the son of Judge Charles Tyler and Susannah Monroe.

(The following is from an e-mail message from Kate Wiley Bartok - 4 Dec 2014)

«i»John Frederick Dorman's 1956 abstract from «u»PRINCE WILLIAM COUNTY, VIRGINIA WILL BOOK C s«/u»hows the 1743 disposition of the estate of William Linton (1706-1733), Susannah's 2«sup»nd«/sup» husband, whom she married in 1728, by Benjamin Grayson (1684-1758), Susannah's 3«sup»rd«/sup» husband, whom she married in 1734. Note the coincidence of the year 1734: the year of the settlement conducted by Benjamin Grayson, who married Susannah the same year. In the settlement the following names appear with identical 46.12.1 pound payments (by far the largest cash payments in the settlement): «b»James Lovell«/b» (who was the husband of Charles and Susannah Tyler's daughter Jane Tyler); «b»Francis Jackson «/b»(who was the husband of Charles and Susannah Tyler's daughter Sallie Tyler); and «b»Charles Tyler.
    «/b»
Thus, Jane, Sallie, and Charles Tyler were treated identically in the disposition, which seems strong evidence for being siblings in equal favor of their still living mother, Susannah, who probably was having some influence on Benjamin Grayson. It strains credulity to think that Susannah would be giving the same inheritance to one, and only one, nephew. Absent, interestingly, are the names John Tyler and Monroe Tyler (usually/sometimes cited as children of Susannah and Charles). It is also interesting that the settlements to Susannah Tyler's children dwarf those to her Linton children, suggesting that she was carefully segregating her inheritance from her deceased first husband, Charles Tyler, from the one she had from William Linton.

Another pair of names were paid differently: «b»Benjamin and Joseph Tyler«/b» received a total of 1552 pounds of tobacco.

Having been paid differently, it seems Benjamin and Joseph were probably not children of Susannah. Of course, Susannah Monroe's first husband, Charles Tyler, is commonly known to have had three siblings, Christian (1687-1754), Joseph (1692-1737), and Benjamin (1694-?). There is no indication if the Benjamin and Joseph Tyler listed here were the siblings of Charles, and if so, why Christian was not included, as he was still living at the time of the settlement. The tobacco settlement may just be repayment of a debt owed by William Linton, and having nothing to do with inheritance from Susannah's husband, Charles Tyler.

I believe that this documentation should be sufficient to again place Capt. Charles Tyler (1717-1768) as a son of Judge Charles Tyler and Susannah Monroe, and remove him from the Benjamin Tyler/Eleanor Middleton line.

Charles married Susannah Monroe in 1716 in , , Virginia, USA. Susannah (daughter of Capt. Andrew Monroe, II and Eleanor Spence) was born in 1695 in , Westmoreland Co., Virginia, USA; died in Nov 1752 in Belle Air, Prince William Co., Virginia, USA; was buried in Belle Air, Prince William Co., Virginia, USA. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

  2. 9.  Susannah Monroe was born in 1695 in , Westmoreland Co., Virginia, USA (daughter of Capt. Andrew Monroe, II and Eleanor Spence); died in Nov 1752 in Belle Air, Prince William Co., Virginia, USA; was buried in Belle Air, Prince William Co., Virginia, USA.

    Notes:

Susannah (or Susanna or Susan) was married three times and had issue by (2) Charles Tyler, and (3) Captain (or Colonel) Benjamin Grayson. The Holt reference says she was the aunt of President James Monroe, but she was probably his first cousin twice removed.

Error alert: The Boggs reference says that Susannah first married William Linton and second Charles Tyler, but the dates of her children indicate that she was first married to Charles Tyler and second to William Linton. Also, the Bolton reference says Susannah was the daughter of Andrew Monroe and Elizabeth Alexander.

From her father, Susannah inherited: one negro boy, 2 cows, 2 steers, household furniture and 10,000 pounds of tobacco.

One reference gives Susannah's birth year as 1704. The Williams reference gives the name of Susannah's first husband as William Luiton.
