«u»«b»«i»SEARCHING FOR THE ORIGINS OF SAMUEL MONROE

«/u»«/b»We have not been able to determine where Samuel was born nor names of his parents. He and Amelia gave his birthplace as PA on U.S. Census reports but two of his children in later years put their father's birth state as N.Y. and North Carolina. I have not been able to find any records of his birth in any of the three states.

Several years ago my brother Kenneth Dean Monroe applied for membership and as I understand reported that Samuel was born in Scotland and that his father was a shoemaker. He got this from a travel agent when he and his wife went on a tour of Scotland. No documentation was given to him nor has any been discovered.

Last year I found on Ancestry.com a page by Doris Munro Hanson titled Clan Munro Genealogy Database 2009. It has Samuel being born to Donald Janet Munro with the correct date of 01 Jun 1807 but the date of death was off by 46 years. This person's Christening was in Kiltearn, Ross-Shire, Scotland. I tried several times to email Doris but with no response. If my Samuel was born in Scotland there should be a record of crossing but so far I have failed to find one.«/i»

    **********

Samuel's parents were named Donald and Janet (Munro) Munro. But there were two couples of the same name, living in the same area at about the same time. The man in both cases was a shoemaker. It has not been possible to determine which was Samuel's parents. Samuel's father may have been Donald [34063].

It is possible that the above information refers to another, non-related person named Samuel.

Samuel immigrated to America and settled in Indiana or Illinois. Ref 1 says he lived for a time on the eastern seaboard and in Pennsylvania and that he may have been a colonist.

  1. 2.  Donald Munro was born about 1777 in Of, Drummond, Scotland; and died.

    Notes:

This person could be Donald [34063]. Because there were two couples in the same area, with the same name, at the same time, and with the same occupation, it is not possible to determine which person this is.

The selection was made based on circumstantial evidence. Although both Donalds seemed to change occupation, this Donald may have stayed in the Drummond - Miltown area, whereas the other seemed to stay in the Blackhall area.

In 1802, Donald was a shoemaker in Drummond. In 1803, he was still in Drummond. By 1807, he was in Milntown, where he is also found in 1810. In 1812, he was a "mealer" in Milntown.
