Dr. Monro succeeded his father and grandfather as Professor of Anatomy in the University of Edinburgh, and was president of the Royal College of Physicians. In 1847, when he retired from the chair of anatomy, it had been occupied from its founding for nearly a century by one family.

«i»Munro, Alexander (1733-1877) Third in a remarkable line of medical Munros, Alexander Munro was the son of an equally famous namesake, who also held the Chair of Anatomy at Edinburgh University. The son, however, was more eminent in research; he made highly significant insights into the order of the lymphatic system and the structure and functions of the nervous system. He had an elder brother who was an eminent London physician. Alexander Munro (Secondus) was succeeded in the Chair of Anatomy by his son, Alexander Munro (Tertius) who ended a remarkable dynasty of Munros spanning 126 years in the Chair of Anatomy at Edinburgh University.

Prof. of Anatomy with father from 1798, in sole charge (as Tertius) from 1808 until his own retirement in 1846, when the family's 126 years reign ended; a voluminous writer; built mansion-house 1823 at Craiglockhart, where he died 10 March 1859; married (1st) 1800 Maria Agnes Carmichael-Smyth, with issue - Alexander (b. 1803), James (b. 1806), Henry (b. 1810), David (b. 1813, d. 1877), Wm.
