Nancy Colleen Munro talked to John on 24 November 1977, when he said he was born in New Haven, married Florence Hoyt on 10 September 1923 in Cleveland, OH. On 11 September, he and Florence left for California. They rented a Chevy and a room with a kitchen in Los Angeles, CA. John said that Florence started right in making chocolate cakes!

John had a variety of jobs. Most of them involved selling things like rugs or cars.

After living in Los Angeles, they bought a lot in Maywood, CA and later traded that for one in Pomona, CA. The lot in Pomona had a house on it that was built in 1895, the address was 737 Lewis Street. Their third son, James Reuben was born in that house in 1935.

John worked for 9 years for the General Telephone Co. in Pomona, CA and retired in 1962 on his birthday, December 31st. He enjoyed lawn bowling and traveling in retirement.

John's brother, James A. Munro Jr. said at one time that after World War I, John worked at Marshall Field Department Store in the rug department; worked in an electrical supply house in New Haven with an Army friend for a short time; and worked in a General Motors assembly plant at Tarrytown, NY before going to Cleveland, OH for a year or two.

Cause of death, Atherosclerotic Cardiovascular disease. Other significant condition contributing to death was Parkinson's Disease. Death certificate signed by Deputy Coroner, 23 September 1985.

John was buried at the Forest Lawn Cemetery in Covina, California.

Delayed birth certificate dated 23 August 1941, certifies that Florence Hoyt was born in Danbury, Fairfield County, CT, January 15, 1897; father Samuel C. Hoyt, age 31, born in Danbury; mother Alice Dickinson, age 34, born in Kennsington, CT; residence of parents, Danbury; occupation of father, clerk; number of children of mother, 2 and 2 living; place of birth, 32 Main Street. Physician certifying, Frank P. Clark, M.D.

Florence Dickinson Hoyt told Nancy Colleen Munro that Florence and her sister, Gladys, were born in the same house, at 32 Main Street, in Danbury, CT, where her grandmother, Mary Jane Andrews Jennings, was born. The house was built after the Revolutionary War. It has been replaced by an office building in the 1970's.

Photocopy of the Certificate of Death for Florence Dickenson Hoyt, date of death, 18 November 1989, lists: Father's name: S. C. Hoyt and mother's name: Alice Dickinson. ERROR: Florence's middle name should have been spelled, Dickinson. Cause of death, Cardiorespiratory Arrest due to Atherosclerotic Heart disease. Other significant conditions contributing to death were anemia and arthritis. Death certificate signed by Dr. Sudhakar Kona, 1848 N. Garey Ave., Pomona, 20 November 1989.

Florence, residence, 3400 E. 39th St.; place of birth, New Haven, Conn.; occupation, housework; father, Samuel C.; mother's maiden name, Alice Dickinson; no previous marriages. CONFLICT: John may have been living in Cleveland at 3400 39th St. Florence was in New Haven the day before their marriage, based on note written by John next to picture of Florence in her wedding dress in Munro family album.

James married the daughter of John Henry and Mary C. (Adams) Allan.

BIOGRAPHY: Ina Donaldson remembers that James and his brother, Charles, returned to home in Scotland from the USA. They came with their wives. From some notes provided by Jamesina Donaldson (of Mosstodloch, Moray) in a letter dated 3 December, 1997 to Margaret Price.

His usual residence was 507 Whitney Ave., New Haven, CT. He was born 19 September 1866, at Grange, Scotland, his usual occupation was real estate and insurance. He was not a veteran. His father was William Munro, born in Scotland; and his mother was unknown by James A. Munro Jr., informant. The maiden name of his wife was Lida Allen. The disease or condition directly leading to death was cerebral thrombosis and embolus with 40 days interval between onset and death. Antecedent cause was 10 years of generalized arterio sclerosis. No autopsy. Signed by Sam B. Kirby, M.D. who attended James from April 1947 until death.

James married Lida Catherine Allen on 19 Sep 1893 in New Haven, New Haven Co., Connecticut, USA. Lida was born on 11 Nov 1866 in Cannon Crossing, Sussex Co., Delaware, USA; died on 11 Jul 1958 in Hamden, New Haven Co., Connecticut, USA; was buried in New Haven, New Haven Co., Connecticut, USA. Lida was the daughter of John Henry and Mary C. (Adams) Allen.

COURT: In the Sussex County Orphans Court records we found the Guardian Accounts of Effie M. Allen, John E. Allen, Eliza C. Allen, Minor, daughter of John H. Allen. The first account for Eliza C. Allen, filed March 10th, 1885, shows capital of $38.56 and a balance income of $9.97. The second account for Lida C. Allen, filed April 14th, A.D. 1887 shows capital of $38.56 and overpaid income of $1.93. The second account includes an entry for Nov. 11 1885: To paid Minor to help pay her way to Philadelphia, $5.00. The third and final account for Lida C. Allen, was presented, examined, adjusted, and settled, August 26 A.D. 1889 and shows capital of $336.95 and a balance income in hand of $59.47. It appears that Lida C. Allen was known as Eliza C. Allen when she was young.

Her usual residence was 507 Whitney Ave., New Haven, CT. She was born 11 November 1866, at Sussex Co., DE; her usual occupation was housewife. She was not a veteran. Her father was John Allen, birthplace unobtainable; and her mother was Mary C. Adams, birthplace unobtainable by James A. Munro Jr., informant. The name of her deceased husband was James Allan Munro Sr. The immediate cause of death was carcinoma of breast metastases to lung with 1 year interval between onset and death. Surgery relevant to death was simple breast amputation performed December 1957. No autopsy. Signed by Sam B. Kirby, M.D. who attended Lida from April until death.

RESIDENCES: Ina Donaldson says in her letter to Jim and Neva Munro, dated 28 January 1998, that she doesn't know when William and Margaret Munro came to the shop at Urquhart, but Grandfather William died at Urquhart in 1891. She doesn't think they were long there, and he wasn't long ill.

CONFLICT: Ina Donaldson (letter, dated 6 February 1997) says that William was born 13 Jul 1836.

COMMENT: Alexander Munro probably was William and Margaret's son who lived in Alloa.

William was buried at the Urquhart Cemetery in Urquhart, Morayshire, Scotland. The gravestone was photographed by James Reuben Munro in September 1993.

William married Margaret Allan on 24 Dec 1861 in Grange, , Banffshire, Scotland. Margaret was born on 23 Jul 1836 in Boyndie, Banffshire, , Scotland; died on 26 Sep 1927 in Urquhart, , Moray, Scotland; was buried in Urquhart, , Moray, Scotland. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

Margaret was the daughter of John and Ann (Reid) Allan.

BIOGRAPHY: Ina Donaldson, in her letter to Neva and Jim Munro, 26 February 1998, tells us that "Grandma Munro used to have all her son's pictures on the top of her dresser, and she used to change them every week and make him the banker for the week." Also, "Granda (William) Munro never lived at Primrose Cottage it was after he died that Grandma moved up there when J. Sime married Jessie Munro and Primrose belonged to Antie Maggie (Wilson) at that time and Gma paid her a rent and Aunt M. kept the garden for hersel (herself), and a while before that it was the Post Office for the Village and up until it was sold the Post Office door was still on what was the kitchen then in Grandma time, but it changed hands a lot since then."

RESIDENCE: More from Ina Donaldson in her letter to Neva and Jim Munro, 6 Apr 1998: Primrose Cottage and Hilton House are both on the main road. Primrose on the right going down (west) and Hilton on the left, on the corner as you go up (south) to the railway station. It has a licensed grocer shop, and it was a shop when Ina's Aunt Maggie lived there. It has changed hands a few times since she hat it. It was a Mr. and Mrs. Kirk that had it last, but he died. Since that the shop has been closed; Mrs. Kirk still (1998) lives there.

CONFLICT: Birth record for William Munro gives his mother's name as Jean Dustan rather than Ann Dustan.
