Daniel Monroe is listed as one of a company of Howard County, Missouri settlers who manned Fort Kincaid, (or possibly Fort Hempstead) strongholds built by the settlers to defend against Indian attacks about 1815.
The first persons to die from disease in Howard County, were Daniel's wife and infant child.
One reference says Daniel's wife was Elizabeth Baronet married 10 Jun 1819.

Daniel was born in either Scotland or Virginia. If he was born in Scotland, the family went to the USA in about 1776.
Daniel enlisted on 3 May 1777 and fought in the American Revolutionary War at Brandywine, Germantown, Monmouth and Valley Forge in the First Regiment of Foot of Maryland. He was discharged in 1780. The family moved to Kentucky and in 1810, moved to what is now Howard County, Missouri.
Family tradition says that Daniel was a cousin of President James Monroe and fought beside him in the Revolutionary War. President Monroe's brother Joseph J. Monroe also lived in Howard County.
