He was a photographer by trade and served as a Union Army officer with the 139th Pennsylvania Regiment during the American Civil War.
He and his brother-in-law, Mr. Watson, started a company called Watson & Munroe a boiler manufacturer, in Pittsburgh about 1860. The company became R. Munroe & Sons, Manufacturing Corp. and then continued as Munroe, Inc.
His wife, Mary Ellen was born at midnight 31 Mar/1 Apr 1844. She was the daughter of James Duncan and Mary Scott Dodds.
