William married Jerusha Almira Monroe on 10 Mar 1836 in , Vanderburgh Co., Indiana, USA. Jerusha (daughter of Joshua Monroe and Julia Almira Fairchild) was born about 1818-1822 in , Tioga Co., New York, USA; died on 28 Apr 1888 in West Franklin, Posey Co., Indiana, USA; was buried on 30 Apr 1888 in Oak Hill Cem., Evansville, Vanderburgh Co., Indiana. 2. 3.  Jerusha Almira Monroe was born about 1818-1822 in , Tioga Co., New York, USA (daughter of Joshua Monroe and Julia Almira Fairchild); died on 28 Apr 1888 in West Franklin, Posey Co., Indiana, USA; was buried on 30 Apr 1888 in Oak Hill Cem., Evansville, Vanderburgh Co., Indiana.

    Notes:

Jerusha (or Jerutia) Almira (or Elmira) Monroe and William K. Ham (or Vann) were married by S. Stephens, JP.

They are found on the 1840 census of Posey or Vanderburgh County, Indiana. William is listed as age 20-30 and Jerusha is listed as age 30-40.
In the 1850 census of Vanderburgh County, Indiana, she is listed as Lucy Ham, age 30.

The 1860 census of Posey County, Indiana shows her as 40 years old.

The 1870 census of Henderson County, Kentucky, lists her as J. A. Royster, 51, living with her second husband, Alexander Royster and her son George Ham, age 27.

The 1880 census of Posey County, Indiana, lists her as a 58 year old mother living in the household of her widowed daughter, Mary's, house.

Several of her siblings named their children after Jerusha. It is reasonable to speculate that as the eldest daughter, she became a mother figure to her siblings after her mother's death.

She worked for many years as the matron at the Orphan Asylum in Evansville, Indiana.

Generation: 3

  1. 6.  Joshua Monroe was born about 1788 in Montville, Berkshire Co., Massachusetts, USA (son of Joshua Monroe and Sarah Maples); died in Jan 1835 in Mount Vernon, Posey Co., Indiana, USA; was buried in , Posey Co., Indiana, USA.

    Notes:

Some references say Joshua was born in Hillsboro, New Hampshire, other evidence points to Scotland as his birthplace in 1780-90. In an 1880 census of Posey County, Indiana, Joshua's son, Edwin indicates that his father was born in Virginia. This is thought to be incorrect.

He was in America in the early 1800's living for a time in Cayuga County, New York, where his first two children were born. Other references say they may have lived for short periods in Nova Scotia, Canada and in Virginia. Sometime between 1816 and 1823, Joshua, his wife, Julia, and their three young children made the long migration from New York to Indiana. The likely migration route was by wagon to the vicinity of Pittsburgh, thence by Ohio River flat boat until reaching the thriving port of Evansville or the smaller one at Mount Vernon in the newly opened lands of southwestern Indiana. The presence of a number of contemporaneous Fairchild families in Posey and Vanderburgh Counties would indicate that Joshua and family were part of a multi-family trek.

Family legend says that Amelia was killed by Indians in 1828 close to the Ohio River in the vicinity of Mount Vernon, Posey County, Indiana. Also killed was Mrs. McFadden, wife of Andrew "Tweedle Dum" McFadden. They were the parents of Miranda Jane McFadden, the future wife of Amelia's son, Edwin. Miranda was with the two women when they were killed, and she was half scalped by the Indians. She bore the scars of her injury for the rest of her life. Amelia does not appear on the 1830 census of Posey County, Indiana, with the rest of the family, so she was probably dead by then. Several references say that Joshua was also killed by Indians at the same time, or died shortly after, but Joshua is on the 1830 census. He died shortly before Jan 1835.

Joshua's wife was named Amelia (or Alma) Julia (or Jane) Fairchild. One reference says there were at least three children born in Cayuga County, New York and the rest were born in Indiana. The children's names come from several different sources that do not agree among themselves, so there may be errors here.

In an area where land was cheap and the principal occupation was farming, there was no record of Joshua owning land. His 1835 estate settlement showed he died insolvent. It is probable that he was poor when he went to America and remained in that condition which could account for the lack of records about him.

There are hints that Joshua was the son of Thaddeus Monroe [7326].

A good deal of information about Joshua appears in ref 2. At least one reference says Joshua died in 1823. Ref 2 says he died "of sickness" in Jan 1835.

Joshua married Julia Almira Fairchild about 1815 in , Otsego Co., New York, USA. Julia was born about 1794 in , Otsego Co., New York, USA; died about 1829 in Mount Vernon, Posey Co., Indiana, USA. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

  2. 7.  Julia Almira Fairchild was born about 1794 in , Otsego Co., New York, USA; died about 1829 in Mount Vernon, Posey Co., Indiana, USA.

    Notes:

Some references call her Amelia Julia Fairchild. Julia and Joshua were married possibly in Otsego, Tioga or Cayuga County, New York.

Some references say Julia was born in Scotland.

There is only indirect proof that Julia's middle name was Almira. She signed her name as Julia A. Monro in 1818.

Julia was the daughter of Levi and Jerusha Fairchild.

She died between feb 1828 and 7 Aug 1830. It is said that she was murdered by Indians.

The following is from the Roeser reference:

«i»Joshua Monroe entered the service of the United States in New London, CT on 1 Jan 1780. He enlisted to serve in the navel service on board the Continental Frigate Trumball carrying 24- 12 Pounders and 8-6 Pounders, commanded by Captain James Nickerson, John Mailering, 1st Lieutenant, Jacob White, 2d Lieutenant, Daniel Star, 3d Lieutenant, David Bill, 4th Lieutenant, Gilbert Solderstill Captain of Marines, Samuel Hand, sailing master, Alexander Piggins, Adam Preroder, Jasper Giffing, 1st mates with a crew of 162.

On the first day of May 1780, the Trumball sailed from New London on a blockading voyage against the British. They sailed south and east of the Bahama Islands. On the first day of June, and at a latitude of about 30 degrees, southeast of the Bahamas we fell in with the Birtish ship Watt of Liverpool carrying 36 guns. The engagement lasted 4 hours and 30 minutes, 42 men of the Trumball were killed or wounded. Joshua Sisis and David Bill were killed and Brad Lesset, David Star and Alexander Aocament were wounded. The Watt withdrew and the Trumball being very much injured was unable to give her chase.

The next morning we started back for Boston, the ports of Philadelphia and New York being in British hands. We arrived in Boston the latter part of June. When the frigate was repaired and loaded with artillery stored for the army, we sailed in September from Boston for Philadelphia where we deposited our load. The Trumball then went on sailing in the company of Continental Frigate Delim off the east coast of the states, guarding the coastline until the last of December 1780 when she returned to Philadelphia where Joshua left the frigate on the 1st of january 1781 and went on board the ship Morning Star sailing to New London where he completed his one year enlistment.

He lived in New London for sixteen years. (Extract from pension application). June 25 1773 Joshua's Grandfather John was appointed guardian in the New London Probate Court. Joshua and Sarah left New London about 1799 and settled in Otsego County NY. Going with them were Susannah Maples Ranson and her husband and David Maples and his wife Lois.

Joshua sold Property of his wife in Montville CT, 17 March 1800. Joshua was listed as head of household in the 1800 Otsego County Federal census. 15 Oct 1800 Joshua purchased property from William Cooper. On 8 September 1812 Joshua sold the same parcel to Robert Bourne for $1800. The same day Joshua purchased a 600 acre parcel in Tioga County New York from Robert Bourn, for $2400, Witnesses: George Bourn, George Bourne Jr., and Joshua Monroe Jr. On 2 Jun 1814 Joshua sold 120 acres of this land to his son David. Witnesses: David Fairchild, Sinson Fairchild. On 17 May 1816 Joshua sold 100 acres of this land to his son Joshua. Witnesses: David Monroe and his wife Polly Monroe.

Joshua made a will in Tioga County NY, 19 March 1841 which was probated 6 March 1848. In the probate file his heirs were identified as Belinda Gillet, wife of Archippus Gillet of Evansville, IN; David Monroe of Seneca County NY; Pardon Monroe of Barton, and the seven children of the deceased Joshua Monroe, son of the testator. The names of Oliver Monroe and Edwin Monroe were the only ones known to the court; they lived in Vanderburgh County IN.«/i»
