Adamantine Johnson contributed much to Chariton County history.

He was born in Lincoln County, Kentucky on 17 May 1824. In 1835, his parents and family moved to Howard County, Missouri, in a part that was later incorporated into Chariton County. In 1848, Adamantine married Pocahontas Rebecca Cabell (a direct descendant of Pocahontas). They had eight children.

In 1856, he was the first president of the first bank started in Brunswick. He was the first elder of the First Christian Church in Brunswick. According to the 1860 Slave Roll, he owned 7 slaves.

Adamantine Johnson and Thomas E. Gilliam were the first manufacturers of chewing tobacco. In 1868, he was the land dealer who sold Charles Ingall and Henry Quiner (Laura Ingalls Wilder's father and uncle) 80 acres of land each in Chariton County for $900 each just a few miles from his farm near Rothville. He was a major stockholder and on the first board of directors for two railroad lines being built during the 1860's and 1870's (Chariton and Randolph Railroad Company and Chillicothe and Brunswick Railroad Company).

In 1868, he built a brick federal-style home for his family on a large farm (1000+ acres) he purchased in Chariton County near Rothville, Missouri. It was completed around 1872. The following is an excerpt from a local history book:

The Adamantine Johnson house was better known in the area as the Charles Waugh home. Mr. Johnson was a successful business man who accumulated property and wealth very rapidly through merchandising, farming, stock raising, and tobacco farming. he owned several large farms near Brunswick. About 1868, he moved to rural Rothville where he built the two story house, the showplace of the community at a cost of $7000.

Edward was a descendant of King Powhatan through Pocahontas and John Rolfe.

After Edward and Harriett married, they settled in Barren County, Kentucky. In 1818, they moved to Missouri and settled in what is now Chariton County, 200 miles north of St. Louis at a place 60 miles west of Daniel Boone, the great pioneer, and immediately upon the borders of the Indian tribes, with whom they established the most friendly relations.

The Indians settled their small causes among themselves, but their hard ones they brought to Edward. Edward said, "I never would act except at the request, and in the presence, of the head chief and his councillors, who would stand by and witness the proceedings with the utmost gravity. Without the shadow of legal authority, I would take my seat under the shade of some large tree, surrounded by 50 to 100 Indians. The matter of dispute was brought to the spot,--whether an ox, horse, bows, arrows, or guns, etc. The plaintiff came forward, or some one for him, and set forth his claims, etc.; then his witnesses were called and examined first by him, then by the defendant. Next the defendant came forward, made his statement, and gave his reasons for holding the property; then his witnesses were called and examined, first by him, then by the plaintiff." He said they all spoke with such brevity, and so directly to the point, that he rarely ever found any difficulty in giving judgment. He always wrote his decision down on paper and read it aloud three times in the hearing of all present, and then handed it to the head chief, who would hold it up and repeat its contents word for word, although he did not know a letter of the alphabet; then he would announce it in the Indian language, and have the property delivered to the right owner. Then there would be signs of satisfaciton: "Ough! ough! good man! good judge! good heart! good head! He wise: he talk to Great Spirit!" The Indians may have known that he was descended from King Powhatan, the father of Pocohontas.

He was elected first clerk of Chariton County, and soon after, clerk of the circuit court.

The following letter was written by Major Charles Yancey, of Traveller's Rest, Buckingham County, Virginia to "His Excellency President Tyler":

"February 18, 1842. Dear Sir,--Permit me to introduce to your notice Mr. Edward B. Cabell, of Missouri, who, I presume, is now in the city of Washington, having left here a few days since. Mr. Cabell seeks the office of Register of the Land Office, which is contemplated to be established in what is called Platte country in Missouri. I think I can say he is a man of integrity, which is hazarding much to say in these days of great moral depravity. You know the Cabell family, and, I presume, the Bolling; his mother was sister to Powhatan and Senacous, and he married a daughter of Joseph J. Monroe. You now have his heraldry; and I rate people very much by their stock, as I do the blooded horse. He is honest, moral, sober, and of business habits. If you cannot do better, take him."

Harriett and Edward were members of the Methodist church for many years. Edward was known as "Uncle Ned" by nearly everyone he knew. He was the friend of the friendless, and his house was the well-known home of the stranger. They took charge of several children whose parents died in extreme want, and raised them from infancy as tenderly as they did their own and finally provided them with comfortable homes.

Edward was buried at Keytesville Cemetery. His tombstone inscription says he was born 29 My 1788 and died 29 Aug 1850 - 62 years.

Joseph was born in Westmoreland County and named for his maternal uncle, Hon. Joseph Jones of Virginia. He was married three times: first, in Albemarle County in 1790 to Elizabeth Kerr; second on 27 Oct 1801 to Sally Gordon; and third on 19 Oct 1808 to Elizabeth Glasscock.

From 1804 until 1810 he was Clerk of the District and Circuit court as shown by a tablet on the wall of the Northumberland County Virginia Court House.

He moved west and died in Franklin, Missouri on 5 Aug 1824.

Joseph was sent to Edinburgh University in Scotland by his brother, James. After failing there, He studied law in Virginia and failed there also.

Col. Joseph Jones Monroe became a member of the Albemarle Count bar. He served as private secretary to President Monroe, and was Clerk of the district and Circuit Court of Northumberland County, Virginia (1804-1810) as shown by a tablet on the wall of the Northumberland County Court House. He was appointed Commonwealth Attorney of Albemarle County in 1811.

His first wife was a daughter of James Kerr.

As a widower, he moved west, probably to Kentucky with his daughter and son-in-law. In 1819, he moved to Franklin, Howard County, Missouri where he was one of the first settlers in the county. There he married Mrs. Hulda (Hubbard) Davis, a daughter of Rev. Hubbard, one of the earliest Baptist preachers in North Missouri.

In 1821, he moved to Keytesville, Missouri.

According to the Missouri "Intelligencer", the first newspaper established west of St. Louis, Joseph "was a man of warm heart, of undoubted integrity, of polished education and inestimable worth."

Refs 1 and 2 say Joseph was born in 1772.

One reference gives his death date as 6 Jul 1824 and his birth date as about 1772. Another reference gives his death date as 1831. His first wife, Eilzabeth Kerr (or Carr) died in childbirth. His second wife was Sally (or Sarah or Sara) Gordon. His fourth wife was Huldah Hubbard (or Hulda Davis). Guilford says he died in Keytesville, Charlton County, Missouri, and Holmes says he died 6 Jul 1824 in Howard County, Missouri.

"Burke's Presidential Families" says that he only had one daughter in his first marriage, and that he only married three times.
