He was an author, member of the Advisory Committee of President Coolidge and President Hoover, member of the Executive Council of the Republican National Committee. He founded the first Red Cross War Chapter in 1914 and was awarded the Legion of Honor.

Colonel James ("General Jimmy") Monroe graduated from West Point in 1815 and in 1839 was elected to Congress.
One reference says that James and Elizabeth were married in 1823.
James acted as the private secretary of President James Monroe.
James and his wife settled in New York City, New York, where he was active in political affairs and was a member of the Peace Convention in 1861.
He raised the four sons of his brother, Augustine Garnett Monroe.
Error alert: The Johnson reference says that James was the son of Andrew's first wife, Frances Garrett. Another reference from Johnson says that James was the son of Andrew Monroe and Ann Bell. James [3751] and James [3587] have the same birth and death dates recorded.
