  1. 1.  Col. Robert Munroe was born on 23 Dec 1716 in , , , Scotland (son of Hugh Munro, of Novar and Isabel Gordon); died on 1 Jul 1804 in Roxbury, Morris Co., New Jersey, USA.

    Notes:

Robert's position as a child of Hugh Munro of Novar has not been proven but is suspected by the Charles Munroe reference.

    **********
«i»1) Robert Monro of Flanders, New Jersey was referred to in family legend as "That Old Tory" and "Colonel".

    2) He is reputed to have fought in the "French and Indian Wars" for the British.

    3) His son James came over with the family. If my great grandmother's information is correct that would have been in 1781 while the Revolutionary War was still active. Robert possibly being called back into service.

    4) The New York Munroes have connections to John and Doctor Robert who went to and settled in "Upper Canada" in the Simcoe area as Loyalists.

    5) Robert, Sr. also is reputed to have fled to Canada for awhile but returned to settle in Flanders, New Jersey.

    6) The supposed discrepancy concerning his date of death is explained by his tombstone which clearly indicates he died 1 July, 1804 and not 28 June, 1803. Apparently Robert suffered a stroke and the doctor informed the family that there was no hope of recovery; therefore an inventory of his goods, which normally occurs after death, was made in June of 1803 leading to the mistaken assumption that this was the date of his death. «/i»

    Notes:

Hugh of Tearivan succeeded his cousin as Laird of Teaninich. He appears to have been a man of much prudence and considerable means, and he added largely to the family possessions.

On 7 Jun 1650 at Chanonry, he sold some goods to James Farquhar, a merchant from Aberdeen.

On 20 Nov 1655, Hugh purchased the lands of Teaninich from his cousin, Hugh, who had gotten into debt and had to sell the estate. On 20 Feb 1660, he added the lands of Milton of Alness by purchasing them from Robert Gray of Arboll for just over 500 pounds. He also purchased other lands in the neighborhood from Farquhar Munro of Teanoird and others.

He did not conform to Episcopacy at first and he was one of the 47 persons in the Northern Counties who were fined for refusing to do so. He paid about 1200 pounds Scots to John Paterson, Bishop of Ross in Feb 1665, but by the end of the year he had taken the oath of allegiance. He soon returned to the Presbyterian fold, however, and became an active elder in the Parish Church of Alness.

According to the valuation roll of 1644, the total rents collected on Hugh's lands was about 440 pounds.

Hugh served as Collector of Customs of Inverness-shire and Commissioner for Supply for Ross in 1667 and 1685.

He lived to a very old age. On 7 Feb 1701, he signed a discharge at Milton of Alness which was witnessed by "Hugh Munro, Younger of Teaninich, my grandchild."
