  1. 1.  John Munro, I of Culcraggie was born about 1598 (son of Andrew Munro, I of Kincraig); died about 15 Feb 1655.

    Notes:

John was born out of wedlock, but was legitimized in 1625. He was made Burgess of Edinburgh in 1620. He purchased Culcraggie from his cousin and was then known as John Munro, 1st of Culcraggie.

His wife was the daughter of Muire, Burgess of Kirkcaldie.

"Andrew Munro of Kincraige married one Mrs Gray by whom he had Andrew and William he had also a natural son John Munro Burgess of Edinburgh afterwards of Culcragie."

    Ref: "The Munro Tree (1734)" by R. W. Munro - L/19

"John Munro of Culcragie married Margaret daughter to Muire Burges of Kirkcaldie by whom he had Mr Andrew Robert Mr William and Christane married to Mr Andrew Munro of Coul and Catherine married to Mr John McGilligan."

"John made burgess 1620, legitimated 1625. Mackenzie names his wife's father 'Munro of Baladie' - an obvious misreading; ... entry hard to decipher at end but may be 'McGilligin of Alnes', i.e. min of Fodderty who had property in Alness."

    Ref: "The Munro Tree (1734)" by R. W. Munro - M/37

"Hector Munro of Culcragie was Lieut. to a foot company under Sir George Munro in Germany and returning thence sold of Culcragie to John Munro Burges of Edinburgh."

John was made Burgess of Edinburgh in 1620. He was an illegitimate son of Andrew Munro of Kincraige, but was legitimated in 1625.

John was called "Burgess of Edinburgh" when he purchased the estate of Culcraggie and an army commission from his distant cousin, Hector Munro. At that time, the estate included Culmellachie, Culcraggie and Acharn. John also purchased other lands contiguous to his property.

Ref. (1) says John married Margaret, daughter of Andrew Munro of Balaldie. R.W. Munro says this is incorrect.

John died before 15 Feb 1655.
