  1. 4.  Linus Munroe was born on 25 Dec 1801 in Penfield, Monroe Co., New York, USA (son of David Munroe and Anna Andrus); died on 15 Sep 1880 in Pittsford, Hillsdale Co., Michigan, USA; was buried in Goodrich Cem..

    Notes:

Linus was a tanner and currier by trade and also operated a boot and shoe store. He had a prosperous business near Rochester, New York, but he had to sell because of failing health. In Aug 1836 he went to the wilds of Michigan with his father and their families. One brother and a sister had preceded them a year before. Linus settled on land which he inherited from his father in Pittsford, Hillsdale County, where he became a farmer and continued to reside until his death. The bulk of his father's homestead remained in Linus' family. Clare Monroe, a great-grandson of Linus, now lives on the homestead at 11131 Union Road, Pittsford, Michigan.

It has been noted that Linus never talked to his children about his childhood and that he regretted going to Michigan and leaving his good home.

The Pottawattamie Indians lived in Squawfield about two miles from Linus' home during the last months before the Indians were moved west of the Mississippi. It is said that Chief Baw Beese had a thorne in his foot which was festering and causing him pain. Linus treated it with poltices and won the Chief's lasting gratitude.

In the Hillsdale County History 1879, it says that one day Mrs. Monroe had killed a six foot snake, and that day Chief Baw Beese came to the house. On seeing the snake he said, "Him bite, no cure." The snake was a Michigan rattle snake.

Linus' wife was Lucy M. Hawley (or Holley).
