Generation: 1

  1. 1.  James Henry Monroe was born on 17 Nov 1824 in , , Pennsylvania, USA (son of Henson H. Monroe and Eliza Campbell); died on 20 Nov 1892 in , Miami Co., Ohio, USA; was buried in Montezuma, Mercer Co., Ohio, USA.

    Notes:

James' family is found on the 1860 census for Mercer County, Ohio. His wife, Elizabeth, is listed as 23 which would put her birthdate as 1837 instead of 1828 as indicated by the information on her tombstone.

James' tombstone says "20 Dec 1892 68y 1m 3d" which suggests that his birthdate was 17 Oct 1824 instead of 17 Nov 1824.

James' parents were from Virginia and one reference suggests that James was born in Virginia, but he was probably born in Pennsylvania. He accompanied his parents to Shelby County, Ohio, where his father bought a farm along the Miami and Erie Canal.

James and Elizabeth settled on a farm in Shelby County and lived there until 1856, when they moved to Franklin Township in Mercer County. His farm included almost all of the present site of Montezuma, Ohio. James farmed all of his active life.

    Notes:

William served as a soldier in the Revolutionary War. In order to secure his pension, he requested his neighbor, General John C. Hunter, to certify his service. General Hunter's letter confirmed his service and also mentioned that William had raised eight children.

In 1850, William was a farmer with $3500 in property living with his family in Washington, Ohio.

It is quite possible that this record is a composite of two individuals. Guilford says William was born about 1776.
