    Notes:

    William Munro, 5th of Culcraggie, sold that property and settled in Glasgow. He was a surgeon in the Merchant Service.

    "This William is said by Mackenzie to be father of Daniel merchant in Glasgow whose son Alexander (1731-1809) was father of Sir Thomas governor of Madras; but records show that Alexander's father was Daniel, baptd 2 Dec 1697, son of Alexander Munro and Bethia Johnston, tailor in Glasgow, burgh treasurer, bailie and deacon convener who d Feb 1764."

    William sold or alienated the estate of Culcraggie and moved to Glasgow, where he became a successful merchant.

  1. 2.  George Munro, Of Culcraggie was born est 1655 in Of, Nigg (son of William Munro, Of Culcraggie and Bethia Balsillie); died on 7 May 1728 in Edinburgh, , Midlothian, Scotland; was buried in Edinburgh, , Midlothian, Scotland.

    Notes:

    George entered the Church and on 22 Mar 1703, he was ordered by the General Assembly to be sent to Ross-shire. He received his licence from the Presbytery of Edinburgh in 1704, and was appointed by the following Assembly, on 24 Mar 1704 to go to Sutherland, where he continued until 1706. At that time, he was appointed to the church and parish of Nigg, Easter Ross.

    On 13 Sep 1716, he attended a meeting of the Presbytery of Dingwall held at Tain. At a meeting of the Presbytery held at Dingwall on 12 Feb 1717, George was recommended to be transferred to the church and parish of Gairloch, but the letter of presentation did not carry the Crown stamp, and the transfer was never completed.

    On 1 May 1718, a meeting of the Presbytery arranged to help George get his church repaired. On 17 Feb 1726, he appears as "Mr George Munro of Culcraggie, minister of Nigg," when he attended at Alness church and voted as a heritor for the appointment of Mr. James Fraser as minister of Alness. He had a new church built in 1727. The valued rental of Culcraggie in Jan 1728 was 83 pounds Scots.

    "Mr. William Munro of culcragie married Bethia daughter to Mr. David Belsillie Minister of Corstorphine by whom he had John Mr [? recte Wm.] Andrew David George Helen and Katherine Munros." "William of Culcraggie student of divinity m 1658 Bethia Balsillie."

    In 1678, Hugh Munro of Teaninich, brought suit against William Munro proprietor of half the lands of Culcraggie; John Mackenzie of Davochcairn, proprietor of a fourth of the lands of Culcraggie; Andrew Munro of Coul, proprietor of a fourth of the lands of Culcraggie; and John Munro of Fyrish, proprietor of a quarter of the lands of Fyrish. Hugh claimed that the other four were not paying him enough for the use of his Mill of Culmalachie. The four were summoned before the Lords of Council and Session to have the case heard, but before the trial date, the group settled their differences in a contract dated at Alness in 1679.

    In 1699, William sold Nether Culcraggie to William Simpson, who held it until 1736. Its valued rental in 1728 was 185 pounds Scots.

    His wife was Ellen, daughter of the Rev. David Ross, minister of Logie-Easter (ref. 1), or Bethia, daughter of Mr. David Belsillie, Minister of Corstorphine (R.W. Munro).

    Notes:

    John was born out of wedlock, but was legitimized in 1625. He was made Burgess of Edinburgh in 1620. He purchased Culcraggie from his cousin and was then known as John Munro, 1st of Culcraggie.

    His wife was the daughter of Muire, Burgess of Kirkcaldie.

    "Hector Munro of Culcragie was Lieut. to a foot company under Sir George Munro in Germany and returning thence sold of Culcragie to John Munro Burges of Edinburgh."

    John was made Burgess of Edinburgh in 1620. He was an illegitimate son of Andrew Munro of Kincraige, but was legitimated in 1625.

    John was called "Burgess of Edinburgh" when he purchased the estate of Culcraggie and an army commission from his distant cousin, Hector Munro. At that time, the estate included Culmellachie, Culcraggie and Acharn. John also purchased other lands contiguous to his property.

    Ref. (1) says John married Margaret, daughter of Andrew Munro of Balaldie. R.W. Munro says this is incorrect.

    John died before 15 Feb 1655.
