The following obituary was written by George's grandson, Herman E. Monroe of Houston, Texas and recorded in the Johnson reference. George's vital records are recorded in the Wirt County Courthouse in Elizabeth, West Virginia.

George A. Monroe was born 6 Dec 1874 in Wirt County, West Virginia and died at home with congestive heart failure on 10 Apr 1948. He was the son of James Monroe and Viletta Fore Chancey. He was married on 18 Sep 1901 to his wife of 47 years.

He was survived by his wife, Barbara Ellen Bell, daughter of Mary Martha "Mollie" Bunner and Joshua D. Bell. He was also survive by his five living children, namely, Elza Harley Monroe of Conroe, Texas; Carrie Dee Mathess of Sistersville, West Virginia; Almeda Jane Heddleson of Caldwell, Ohio; Frank P. Monroe of Elizabeth, West Virginia; and Edith Ellen Monroe of Durham, North Carolina.

He was preceded in death by two children, namely, a son, James Monroe and a daughter, Gladie Monroe. His parents James and Viletta Monroe and grandparents, William M. and Hannah Edwards Monroe also preceded him in death. They were all buried in Wirt County, West Virginia.

George was a member of the Hartley Church where he lived as a young man. He was buried on the family farm two miles from Brohard, West Virginia. His funeral services were conducted by Pomeroy Funeral Home of Elizabeth, West Virginia.

Notes:

Viletta is believed to have been 100% Cherokee Indian. According to the 1880 Wirt County census, she was living in the household of James Monroe and his mother, Hannah (Edwards) Monroe. She is listed as a domestic with a 5 year old child by the name of George Monroe. Her parents may have been on the "Trail of Tears" and went to Oklahoma territory.
