Sarah's husband, Wiley Gilmore, fought in the Civil War. He carried a bullet in his arm till the day he died in 1923. He had a twin brother, William, Jr.
A little over a month after she married, her father died. Since her mother had died about five years earlier and since she was the oldest child, she took her minor brothers and sisters (including her half brother, Walter) to live with her and her new husband. They are all shown as members of the same household on the Newton County, Mississippi census in 1870.
In 1872 Sarah and Wiley settled near Canton, Texas. They brought with them her siblings: Barney, Caroline, William, Julia, Blanche, and possibly Joseph.

James' father is said to have been the brother of President James Monroe, but no solid details are known.
He moved to Decatur, Newton County, Mississippi before 1840, and is found on the census there in 1840, 1850 and 1860. He was a farmer, a lawyer, a State Senator from the district comprising Newton & Jasper counties (1854-1856), and Mayor of Decatur.
He is reported to have been a slave holder and may have fought in the Civil War.
