During the Civil War, Thomas enlisted in the 28th Regiment of the Pennsylvania Volunteers. He fought in many of the major battles of the Civil War including Antietam and Gettysburg. He was commissioned in the latter stages of the war and was wounded twice.

In 1832, the Duke of Wellington gave William 300 acres of land in the Pictou area of Nova Scotia in lieu of a pension for service in the British Army. In 1849 William moved his wife and 10 children to Pennsylvania.
