    Emmett Johnson Whalian (or Whalien)

Emmett's mother died when her second child was born. He was boarded around until his father remarried and he moved back home. Although he loved his father, his step-brothers made his life miserable. His life was brightened by Rosa who had also lost her mother and was living with her aunt Emma, Emmett's step-mother. They both became teachers and had many things in common and they eventually fell in love and married.

Emmett attended Valpariso Normal School to sharpen his teaching skills. Before his marriage, he alternated between farming with his father and teaching schools of 10 weeks to 4 months duration. He was paid $20 per month for teaching.

When Emmett's mother died, she left cash in trust for his college education. He wanted to be a lawyer. He was a brilliant student and looked forward to attending the University of Michigan law school. However, when he was ready to use the money in trust for him, he found that it had been spent by his guardian to buy a piece of land adjoining the farm. This was a keen disappointment.

He tried to become interested in farming but realized that he would not be using his talents in agriculture. He and Rosa and their two girls moved to Ann Arbor, Michigan then moved to Howell, Michigan where he took a job at the Michigan Condensed Milk Company testing raw milk. The family lived there until 1901.

In 1910, the family moved to Fingal, North Dakota where Emmett took the position of Superintendent of Schools. Emmett's Uncle John Kalmbach, who taught at Fargo College at the time, was influential in getting the family to make this move. They moved again to Carrington, North Dakota in 1919 where Emmett went into the insurance business. That summer they moved to Larimer, North Dakota where Emmett taught Manual Arts, or Shop. He served one year as County Superintendent of Schools in Manville.

At about this time, they sent their daughters to California to live with relatives because they thought they would get a better education there. Later, in 1925, Emmett and Rosa moved to California. He got a job in Porterville for a year. They then moved to Salinas, California in later years, where he was very active in the Methodist church. In Salinas, he was robbed of church money and a gold watch as he went home from a church function one night. The church bought him a new watch.

Emmett lived with his daughter, Amy in his old age until it was necessary to place him in a nursing home. One night he wandered away from the nursing home and was found freezing in a field. He contracted pneumonia and passed away. His final estate was valued at $2,288 which was distributed equally among the five surviving daughters.

Emmett was an amateur actor and a good public speaker. He participated in debates and the local Debating Society. He regularly attended the North Lake Methodist Church.
