John Colin Mcphail Munro

Notes:

Large of frame and of tall stature, John was a strong man of few words and good character, respected byhis friends and neighbors. A fellow worker once said of him, "He is the strongest man I have ever known."

As far as is known, John was the last male descendant of George Munro to have bourne the family name.

Four years after the death of his brother, John, Alexander was appointed by the Court of Probate to administer the estate of John who had died abroad and on 6 Aug 1858 John's property was sold at auction.

Notes:

Family tradition says Jessie was the daughter of the son of the Duke of Argyll and his commoner wife. When it became time for the son to succeed his father as the Duke, he abandoned his commoner wife and Jessie's grandmother brought Jessie and her sister to Pictou Island, Nova Scotia. Correspondence with the Office of the Duke of Argyll at Inverary Castle and with the National Library of Scotland could provide no proof of this.

Notes:

George and his family sailed from Aberdeen, Scotland on the ship "Good Intent" in 1815 and took two to three months passage before arriving in Pictou, Nova Scotia, Canada. They were among several families aboard the "Good Intent" sho settled in Caribou, Pictou Co., Nova Scotia. They lived first on the mainland. In Nov 1833, George bought Little Caribou Island, later known as Munro's Island and containing three hundred acres, from Thomas Dickson, Esq.

George was a farmer and a ship builder. His will was recorded in Pictou in 1853. His son, George, Jr., administered his father's estate.

George married Christian Macbeath on 18 Mar 1808 in Reisk, Kildonan Par., Sutherlandshire, Scotland. Christian was born in 1787-1788 in , , , Scotland; died on 20 Dec 1843; was buried in , Pictou Co., Nova Scotia, Canada. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

Notes:

Christian may have been the daughter of Robert and Christian (Gunn or Gun) McBeath.

The McBeaths were in Kildonan Parish. Mormon records of Kildonan Parish, Sutherland mention a family of McBeaths from Reisk of Arichlinie. Lake Arichlinie is located in Kildonan Parish in the area north of Reisk. It is assumed that this is the place reffered to in the Parish Record of George Munro's marriage to Christian McBeath.
