Peter Townsend Austen, Ph.D.

Notes:

Peter was the son of John Haggerty and Elizabeth Alice (Townsend) Austen. He lived at Staten Island, New York and New Brunswick, New Hampshire.

He was a chemist, professor and inventor.

He graduated from the School of Mines, Columbia University in 1872 - Phi Gamma Delta - Phi Beta Kappa - Ph.D. He spent four years at Leipzig, Germany under the great Hoffman, taught chemistry at Rutgers College and Polytechnic School, Brooklyn, New York until 1892. He then had his own office in New York as a scientist and inventor. He was with Nash Products, was called by the state water supply, and talked before the Legislature in Washington, D.C. regarding Royal Baking Powder.

He was one of the Judges at the St. Louis Fair, was well read on almost any subject, a most brilliant man of his time. He played the organ at Rutgers and led the choir, played piano and cello and had a musical group in his home on Sunday afternoons.

He wrote numerous booklets on science.
