James owned a restaurant, barber shop and newsstand in Depot in Sioux City, Iowa until 1907 when the Harvey Corporation bought him out.

James married Francisque Irene Rhodes on 1 Jun 1898 in Sioux City, Woodbury Co., Iowa, USA. Francisque (daughter of Edwin Rhodes and Rosalia Adeline Totman) was born on 30 Oct 1878 in , Grant Co., Wisconsin, USA; died in 15 May in Kenton, Hardin Co., Ohio, USA. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

Notes:

Francisque "Frankie" and her husband moved to a farm near Kenton, Ohio in 1907. Frankie was a city girl and was unhappy on the farm, so in 1908, they moved to Chicago and bought a grocery store. In 1914, they moved back to the farm and then back to Chicago again in 1917. In 1922, they retired to Dunkirk, Ohio.

Ref. (1) p. 245 gives her birth date as 30 Oct 1878, p. 378 says it was 30 Oct 1873. Page 378 says she died on 15 May 1908, but intimates that she retired to Dunkirk, Ohio in 1922. Her last child was born in 1916.

Edwin married Rosalia Adeline Totman on 7 Jan 1873 in Cassville, Grant Co., Wisconsin, USA. Rosalia (daughter of Jonathan Totman and Nancy Monroe) was born on 15 Apr 1854 in Glen Ellen, Grant Co., Wisconsin, USA; died on 8 Jan 1920 in Pierre, Hughes Co., South Dakota, USA; was buried in Sioux City, , South Dakota, USA. In 1874-1875, Rosalia and Edwin went with their daughter, Frankie from the woods of Wisconsin to the prairie of Nebraska. They had to cross the Mississippi River in a rowboat, and traveled most of the way by covered wagon. They bought some land in Nebraska and planted crops, but the grasshoppers came in droves and destroyed the plants. They became discouraged and returned to Wisconsin.

In 1879, they heard of the new Iowa country where railroads were being built, so with the family and mother, they left for Iowa. Again crossing the Mississippi with two small children, they went to Dubuque, Iowa, and then to what was then known as Rock Valley. Edwin built the first building there and it was then known as Rhodes Corners.

Rosalia was a fine seamstress and milliner. After her husband's death, she took a homestead at Phillips, South Dakota, about two miles out into the country. Every working day, she walked the two miles to her place of business and then home again at night. She remarried in 1912

Jonathan married Nancy Monroe in 1848. Nancy (daughter of Lemuel Munroe and Martha Rawlings) was born on 17 May 1820 in Bristol, Ontario Co., New York, USA; died on 6 Jun 1888 in Storm Lake, Buena Vista Co., Iowa, USA; was buried in Storm Lake, Buena Vista Co., Iowa, USA. Notes:

Nancy and her husband, Jonathan, with two sons, Francis and Jonathan, migrated in 1853 from New York to Grant County, Wisconsin. They went in company with Jonathan's brother, DeLoss Totman and his family. They went by train to Chicago, then by oxen-drawn coverd wagon to Wisconsin. There were ten in the party, including the driver.
