They bought some land in Nebraska and planted crops, but the grasshoppers came in droves and destroyed the plants. They became discouraged and returned to Wisconsin.

In 1879, they heard of the new Iowa country where railroads were being built, so with the family and mother, they left for Iowa. Again crossing the Mississippi with two small children, they went to Dubuque, Iowa, and then to what was then known as Rock Valley. Edwin built the first building there and it was then known as Rhodes Corners.

Rosalia was a fine seamstress and milliner. After her husband's death, she took a homestead at Phillips, South Dakota, about two miles out into the country. Every working day, she walked the two miles to her place of business and then home again at night. She remarried in 1912
